Many lawyers, doctors, dentists and coaches feel uncomfortable asking for reviews. Some worry it looks like begging. Others worry about their professional rules or client confidentiality.
The good news is that Google allows you to ask your clients for honest reviews. Done carefully, asking for feedback fits a professional practice. Here is how.
1. Know what Google allows
You may ask real clients to share their honest experience. You may not:
- Offer anything in return, such as a discount, a free session or a gift.
- Ask staff, friends or family to post reviews.
- Write reviews for yourself.
- Ask only happy clients and avoid the rest.
- Pressure clients on your premises to post a review on the spot.
Breaking these rules can lead Google to remove reviews or restrict your profile.
2. Ask at the right moment
The best time to ask is soon after a clear milestone: a matter concluded, a course of treatment completed, a coaching programme finished. The experience is fresh, and the client knows what they are reviewing.
3. Make it easy
Copy your review link from your Google Business Profile and send it directly. Most people will not search for your practice and find the review button themselves.
4. Use a short, respectful message
Here is a simple WhatsApp message you can adapt:
"Good afternoon Mrs Okafor. Thank you for trusting us with your matter. If you have a moment, we would appreciate an honest review of your experience on Google. It helps others decide if we are right for them. Here is the link: [review link]. Thank you."
No pressure, no incentive, and the client chooses what to say.
5. Reply without breaking confidentiality
Clients may mention details of their case or treatment in a review. Your reply must never confirm or add to those details. Keep replies general:
"Thank you for your kind words. We are glad you had a good experience with our team."
Not: "We are glad your land dispute was resolved" or "We are happy your root canal went well."
6. Handle negative reviews calmly
Reply once, politely, and invite the person to contact you directly. Do not argue in public, and do not reveal anything about the person or their matter. Then look honestly at whether something in your process needs fixing.
