From First Consultation to Paying Client: A Simple Follow-Up Process for Professionals
Too many consultations end with "Let me think about it" and then silence. Here is a simple before, during and after process that helps lawyers, coaches and consultants turn more consultations into paying clients.

Many consultations end with the same words: "Let me think about it and get back to you." Then nothing happens.
Often the person did trust you. The problem was that the next step was not clear, the fee was not in writing, and nobody followed up. Here is a simple process that fixes all three. It is written for lawyers, coaches and consultants, and clinics can adapt the same steps.
1. Before: confirm and prepare
The day before the consultation, send a short WhatsApp message confirming the date, time, location and consultation fee. Share a Google Maps pin so they do not get lost. Ask them to bring any documents you need, and ask two or three short questions so you arrive prepared.
2. During: listen, summarise, recommend
- Let the person explain their situation without interrupting.
- Summarise it back in one or two sentences so they know you understood.
- Explain their options in plain English, including the option of doing nothing.
- Recommend one option and say why.
- State your fee clearly and what it covers.
- Agree the next step and a date before they leave.
3. After: send a written summary within one day
A short written summary shows you listened and gives the person something to share with a spouse, partner or business partner before they decide. For example:
"Good evening Mr Bello. Thank you for meeting with me today. Here is a short summary: [their situation in one sentence]. My recommendation: [the option]. Fee: [amount in naira] covering [scope]. Next step: [what happens next]. I am happy to answer any questions."
4. Put the fee and scope in writing
Send a simple proposal or engagement letter that sets out what you will do, what is not included, the fee in naira, how and when to pay, and how long the offer stands. Clear terms at the start prevent disputes later.
5. Follow up, politely, twice
If you do not hear back, send a short message after three days and another after a week. Keep it helpful, not pushy:
"Good morning Mr Bello. I am following up on our meeting last week. Do you have any questions about the proposal? I am happy to talk them through."
If there is still no reply, close the loop kindly and leave the door open. A respectful last message is remembered.
6. Make starting easy
When someone says yes, send a welcome message straight away: what happens next, documents needed, how to pay and who to contact. A smooth start is the first proof that they made the right choice.
Do this today

- List everyone you consulted in the last month who did not go ahead, and follow up once.
